The Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS) was set up to assist the development of Victoria’s best athletes. It was established in 1990 by the State Government as a private trustee company, with its Board of Directors appointed by the Victorian Minister for Sport.
The VIS is located at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park. The VIS headquarters completed a renovation in February 2023, providing a brand new workspace for athletes and staff. It is a non-residential institute, which utilises Melbourne’s outstanding sporting facilities, to allow high performance athletes to live and train in Melbourne, the sporting capital of Australia.
The VIS operates in partnership with National Sporting Organisations and State Sporting Associations to deliver high performance daily training environments (DTEs) for sports and athletes in support of the National High Performance Sport Strategy outcomes. Our facility and staff help prepare and support future and current Olympic, Paralympic, Commonwealth Games and World Champion athletes.

Job Description
About the role:
This role is central to the physical preparation and ongoing athletic development of VIS Wheelchair Basketball program athletes, working within an inter-disciplinary performance support team to optimise athlete performance, health and wellbeing.
The primary focus of this position is to:
Deliver individualised physical preparation programs to VIS Wheelchair Basketball scholarship athletes, maximising athletic development and performance outcomes.
Measure, monitor and evaluate key strength and conditioning variables to track athlete progression and identify areas for development.
Collaborate with coaches and performance support staff to ensure consistency of physical preparation principles across the training and competition environment.
Contribute to the alignment of athlete development across the high-performance pathway in partnership with national sporting organisation stakeholders.
Responsibilities include but not limited to:
Deliver physical preparation plans and programs to identified Wheelchair Basketball program athletes.
Design individual physical preparation programs to maximise athletic development in consultation with coaches and support staff.
Provide the highest level of technical S&C coaching across strength, speed, agility, endurance and rehabilitation.
Measure and monitor key performance-related strength and conditioning variables to demonstrate progression and identify areas for development.
Attend regular meetings with coaches and support staff to discuss individual athlete performance and health status.
Collaborate with national sporting organisation stakeholders to ensure alignment and progression of athletes across the high-performance pathway.
Ensure all support is provided within an ethical framework based on evidence-based, best practice scientific principles.
Actively promote and implement the National Quality Standards and AIS Best Practice Guidelines.
Provide support within the daily training and competition environments.
Comply with relevant legislation, VIS policies and procedures, and the VIS Code of Conduct.
Desired Skills and Experience
Required Skills & Experience:
Degree in Sports Science or equivalent
Minimum of 2 years working within a development pathway or high performance sport environment
ASCA Professional Level 2 Accreditation or higher
Current Victorian Working with Children Check (must be in place before employment commences)
Sports Integrity Australia relevant courses (Level 2 Anti-Doping, Match Manipulation, Child Safeguarding)
Current First Aid & CPR qualification
Current Driver's Licence
Demonstrated history of improving athletic performance
Demonstrated experience working within an interdisciplinary team with HP staff, coaches and athletes
Strong problem-solving skills with the capacity to deal with complexity
Excellent interpersonal, communication, time management and planning skills
Demonstrated experience in influencing behaviour and/or leadership
Desirable qualifications/experience:
Diverse experience working with multiple sports and athlete populations
