The Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS) was set up to assist the development of Victoria’s best athletes. It was established in 1990 by the State Government as a private trustee company, with its Board of Directors appointed by the Victorian Minister for Sport.
The VIS is located at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park. The VIS headquarters completed a renovation in February 2023, providing a brand new workspace for athletes and staff. It is a non-residential institute, which utilises Melbourne’s outstanding sporting facilities, to allow high performance athletes to live and train in Melbourne, the sporting capital of Australia.
The VIS operates in partnership with National Sporting Organisations and State Sporting Associations to deliver high performance daily training environments (DTEs) for sports and athletes in support of the National High Performance Sport Strategy outcomes. Our facility and staff help prepare and support future and current Olympic, Paralympic, Commonwealth Games and World Champion athletes.

About the role:
With the Head Coach regularly engaged in National Team duties, this role is central to maintaining the consistency, quality and continuity of the daily training environment and athlete development outcomes.
The primary focus of this position is to:
Provide day-to-day delivery of the VIS Wheelchair Basketball Program, ensuring a high-quality daily training environment that maximises the development of categorised Victorian athletes.
Maintain program standards and athlete progression, ensuring alignment with national program direction and performance targets, and providing stability and continuity within the environment.
Drive individual athlete development, working collaboratively with the Performance Support Team to implement and monitor Individual Athlete Performance Plans (IAPPs) under the direction of the Head Coach.
Play a key role in the identification and development of emerging talent, actively contributing to Talent Identification initiatives in partnership with the VIS Para Sport Unit and Basketball pathways to strengthen the future athlete pipeline.
Responsibilities include but not limited to:
Deliver the day-to-day delivery of the VIS Wheelchair Basketball program, ensuring a high-quality daily training environment aligned with national direction and performance targets.
Collaborate with the Head Coach to design and implement the high-performance training program, delivering technical, tactical, physical and psychological development through group and individual sessions.
Provide advanced technical coaching, including session planning, delivery and feedback to drive measurable athlete development and progression.
Support athlete performance planning, monitoring and review, contributing to the implementation of Individual Athlete Performance Plans (IAPPs) in collaboration with the Performance Support Team.
Maintain consistency of program standards and athlete progression, ensuring alignment with national expectations across the training and competition environment.
Contribute to athlete progression into National Squad and Team environments.
Support Talent Identification and pathway development initiatives, working in partnership with Basketball Australia, Basketball Victoria and the VIS Para Sport Unit.
Build and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders, including coaches, Performance Support staff and system partners.
Maintain accurate athlete records and contribute to program reporting and review processes.
Assist in the coordination of training and competition activities and undertake additional duties as required.
Desired Skills and Experience
Required Skills & Experience:
Level 1 (Club coaching) certificate (Level 2 – Association Coach is desirable) or overseas equivalent.
Experience developing, coaching, managing and leading a Wheelchair Basketball or Basketball program that meets the needs of elite and potential elite athletes and their coaches
Current Victorian Working with Children Check (must be in place before employment commences)
Successful completion and currency of Level 1 & 2 Sport Integrity Australia (SIA) accreditation
Successful completion of SIA "Keep Sport Honest" Anti‐match fixing education components
Recent relevant coaching experience at senior national level
Current First Aid & CPR qualification
Experience working in international / domestic high‐performance sport environments, developing talented performers into podium potential / podium performers
Experience with implementing and driving monitoring systems for athlete development and tracking across local/national systems
Intermediate/Advanced knowledge of MS Office and other sports specific computer programs
Desired qualifications/ experience
Graduate qualification in a sports related field
Ability to contribute to the development of the VIS high performance culture and environment
Experience and ability in dealing with volunteers
Knowledge of the Australian High-Performance Sport Systems
