The Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS) was set up to assist the development of Victoria’s best athletes. It was established in 1990 by the State Government as a private trustee company, with its Board of Directors appointed by the Victorian Minister for Sport.
The VIS is located at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park. The VIS headquarters completed a renovation in February 2023, providing a brand new workspace for athletes and staff. It is a non-residential institute, which utilises Melbourne’s outstanding sporting facilities, to allow high performance athletes to live and train in Melbourne, the sporting capital of Australia.
The VIS operates in partnership with National Sporting Organisations and State Sporting Associations to deliver high performance daily training environments (DTEs) for sports and athletes in support of the National High Performance Sport Strategy outcomes. Our facility and staff help prepare and support future and current Olympic, Paralympic, Commonwealth Games and World Champion athletes.

Job Description
The Opportunity:
The VIS Performance Science Department are offering an exciting opportunity for Exercise and Sport Science students/ graduates seeking to gain valuable, practical experience in supporting the preparation of elite athletes in a High-Performance environment.
The 2025-26 traineeships are open to current undergraduates, graduates, or postgraduates of Exercise and Sport Science (or equivalent) degrees. Traineeships are a 12-month volunteer role with successful applicants requested to commit to a minimum of 10 hours per week. Given the nature of sport, out-of-hours and weekend work will also be required.
Traineeships are located within the VIS Performance Science department and are directly supervised by a VIS Performance Scientist. The traineeships include fortnightly workshops hosted by staff across Performance Science, Physical Preparation, Nutrition, Wellbeing, Medical, Coaching and Management level to provide a unique insight into the VIS. Workshops are designed to facilitate discussion, increase technical knowledge and share current best practice and ways of working.
Traineeships align with one of the VIS Performance Science disciplines – Movement Science (Biomechanics and Skill Acquisition), Performance Analysis, or Physiology.
Key Responsibilities & Duties:
The key tasks supporting VIS Performance Scientists in each discipline include, but are not limited to:
Movement Science (Biomechanics & Skill Acquisition)
Video capture to analyse movement (both qualitative and quantitative) during training and competition
Collection of kinematic data across a range of sports utilising various resources
Data entry, analysis, and generation of reports for coaches, athletes, and other members of the performance team
Assist with various skill-based interventions
Involvement in data collection and analysis for VIS research projects
Performance Analysis
Collection of testing and training data
Input of data into databases, analysis, and generation of reports for coaches, athletes, and members of the performance team
Video capture, live feedback & analysis (both qualitative and quantitative) during training and competition
Match analysis using various software packages
Performance analysis and feedback during and after competition
Utilisation of data science skillsets for specific sport projects
Physiology
Collection of testing and training data
Input of data into databases, analysis, and generation of reports for coaches, athletes, and members of the performance team
Monitoring of training loads
Wellness monitoring
Strategies to accelerate recovery and regeneration after training and during competition
Race profiling for changes in speed, efficiency, work output, fatigue, and physiological markers
Heat acclimation strategies for athletes preparing to compete in the heat
Altitude training programming and monitoring

Traineeships are available to current undergraduates, graduates, or postgraduate students studying Exercise & Sport Science or related courses.
Applicants must be based in Victoria and can attend VIS headquarters (Albert Park) and various daily performance environments around Melbourne to be eligible for the traineeship.
Traineeships are NOT offered to high school students.
